Thanks for tuning in again! Today I am honored to be with Julia Meyerson, the Founder and Executive Director of the Vista College Preparatory School. This school is extremely unique in the sense that they are preparing their kindergartners for college. They believe that good students can be cultivated from an early age. They believe that the quality of a teacher determines a student's academic achievement, not race or socioeconomic background.
Vista College Prep is a kindergarten-3rd grade charter school, and it opened up in 2013. They're slowly growing and adding a new grade every year until they reach capacity at 5th grade. Julia is from Arizona, and she is dedicated to furthering education in her home state. After spending her time with Teach for America in the Bronx for two years, she knew she was committed to education.
Vista College Prep is modeled after the many different schools that Julia has studied, and the best practices from each one have been implemented. The idea of exceptional teachers is core to their success, and they search nationwide for the best talent that they can find. They have a very high emphasis on literacy, and their school days are longer than most other institutions. The last piece of the puzzle here is that Vista places a strong emphasis on the students' families. They meet with each student's families in their homes before they are accepted, and they have nearly a 100% attendance rate at student-teacher conferences.
There are also multiple after-school programs that students can partake in. There is a theater program, chess club, and a band, among many other clubs. As the school continues to grow, they can offer additional enrichment programs.
If you would like to help Vista College Prep you can volunteer for one of the after-school programs. They need people who are willing to interact with the students, and it's also a great way to get involved in the community.
