Welcome back to another episode of our video series that introduces great small businesses and nonprofit organizations to the people of Phoenix. Today we have the pleasure of being joined by Christy McClendon, president and CEO of New Pathways for Youth here in Phoenix. She will talk to us a little today about her organization and what they do to shape our future.

New Pathways for Youth has been around for over 26 years. The group was founded by volunteers who wanted to expose the at-risk youth in Phoenix to the possibilities that a personal development curriculum opens.

The youth in this program come from difficult backgrounds, from homelessness to delinquency. This program matches them with a mentor, who will work with them one on one through workshops to develop core life skills, as well as spending time outside of the structured environment, where those values can be deepened and create new possibilities for the youth. Although they only look for a yearlong commitment from mentors, Christy’s hope is that through this program, we create lifelong guides and mentors for the youth of Phoenix.

Christy herself was brought up in a poor community in Southern Kentucky, and was primarily raised by her grandparents. It was the mentors in her life that created the focus, support, and guidance to get her where she is today. She wants to pass that along, all the while providing positive role models for our youth.

The greatest need that New Pathways for Youth has is for adult mentors. They want people who are looking to give back to the community, and provide a positive example for at-risk youth, coming into their lives in order to shape their futures. The time commitment is small, anywhere from 8-10 hours a month, but the impact is invaluable. They will provide all the training and support you need as a mentor.
