Today we are excited to introduce another great Phoenix business that is shaping the youth in our community. Rising Youth Theatre is a great arts program in Phoenix, and the Co-Founder and Artistic Director, Xanthia Angel Walker, is here today to talk to us a little about her theatre.
Rising Youth Theatre is a 5-year old company. Xanthia and her Co-Founder met at Arizona State University, where they both got MFA's in youth theatre. They met in the program, and decided to start a business together teaching and shaping the stars of the future.
They scouted a number of different cities before they ultimately decided on Phoenix. They looked at Chicago, Minneapolis, and a few other cities before ultimately deciding on Phoenix because there wasn't another organization like theirs around, and there were plenty in Chicago and the Twin Cities. They credit the enthusiasm of the Phoenix arts community with helping them get their footing and allowing them to be in business for over 5 years now.
So far, all their shows have been original material. They are dedicated to making their shows about young people's true stories, through collaborations with young people and adult artists. An example of a recent play they did was a hip-hop inspired performance of the classic Antigone, which took place in an alley.
