We had such a great time with Trellis President and CEO Patricia Garcia Duarte, that we wanted to share some more of our conversation with you. Trellis (previously NHS) just celebrated its 40th year in Phoenix, so we wanted to talk to Patricia about where they started and how they have evolved over the years.
Trellis started as a home improvement program that created a loan pool, which was used to do home improvement loans. From the beginning, they have had both the construction and lending aspects to their program.
Since then, they have been able to counsel and educate nearly 28,000 people! They have also been able to provide a lot of financial assistance. Studies have shown that when people have access to down payment and closing cost assistance programs, more people become homeowners. Those same people who attend classes and are educated about mortgages have a much smaller default rate because of that education.
The newest program they have is called Neighborhood Lift, where anyone interested in buying in Maricopa County can benefit from $7,500 in a loan that is forgiven after three years. Any buyer in Maricopa County who meets the income criteria and deal with an approved lender can qualify for this assistance.
Thanks again to Patricia for joining us, we had a very good time talking with her. If you have any questions for her, you can visit Trellis on 14th and McDowell in Phoenix, give her a call at (602)-258-1659, or visit the Trellis website here to learn more.
